Hooks and the bench handle the items used every day. Baskets occupy the upper cubbies, while drawers keep smaller items out of view. Dividing the unit into bays gives each person or category a clear zone.
A mudroom built-in should also allow comfortable seating and preserve circulation through the entry. The wall width, door swings and path through the room guide the final dimensions.

Enough for a coat on a hook without crushing the one beside it — commonly somewhere around 16 to 24 inches per bay. The wall length and the number of people using the entry decide where in that range the layout lands.
A bench people actually sit on to take off boots usually finishes near normal seat height, roughly 17 to 18 inches including the cushion. Drawer or basket storage below is planned around that finished height rather than the other way round.
Often, in a shallower form. Where a bench would block the path, hooks, a slim shelf and closed lower storage can carry most of the function. Door swings and circulation are measured before the depth is fixed.
